Q-5-4: ECDIS/AIS
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Learning objective:
After the course participants should be able to use ECDIS and AIS to maintain the safety of navigation.
Content:
The content of the course reflects STCW A-II/1 and A-II/2 including
1. IMO Resolusjons
a. ECDIS, A.817(19)
b. AIS, A.917(22)
2. Knowledge and capacity of ECDIS operations, including
a. Understanding of ENC and AIS data
b. Danger of over-reliance, system errors and limitations
c. Knowledge of ECDIS and AIS functions
3. Proficiency in operations, interpretation, and analysis of information obtained from ECDIS and AIS
a. Use of functions integrated with other navigation systems
b. Safe monitoring and adjustment of information, including information from AIS
c. Confirmation of vessel position by alterative means
d. Use of ECDIS and AIS settings in accordance with operational procedures
e. Use of alarm parameters in ECDIS and AIS
4. Control completeness of chart data and chart updates
5. Use of system configuration and back up files
6. Use of log files
Note: Simsea can also run the required maker's course for each ship owner/ECDIS mark provided availability of ECDIS maker's software. Such a course will last for one day.
Duration:
3 days, 22 hours including 14 hours simulator training.

Officers in charge of a navigational watch
Prequalification
Nautical education at management level
Number of participants:
Maximum 12
Examination
Written and practical
Educational equipment
Kongsberg simulator, classroom with smartboard for presentations and playback of exercise in classroom during debrief.
QUALIFICATIONS INSTRUCTORES AND EXAMINORS
Instructors and examiners should be qualified according to requirements given in Simsea procedure Q-3-3.
DOCUMENT OF EVIDENCE
Document of evidence declares that the candidate have participated and passed the exams in ECDIS and AIS combined course according to STCW A-II/1 and A-II/2 and included fourteen hrs simulator training, including DP (when applied).
The document is signed by Director and Training Manager.
RULES AND REGULATIONS
The course reflects and is in accordance with the provisions in STCW A-II/1 and A-II/2.
